Treasure of the Amazon forest.(ขุมทรัพย์ป่าอเมซอน) :'(
โลกเรานี้มีป่าดงดิบอยู่หลายแห่ง แต่ไม่มีป่าดงดิบใด จะกว้างใหญ่ไพศาล และคงความบริสุทธิ์ยิ่งไปกว่าป่า "อเมซอน" แห่งอเมริกาใต้ มีเรื่องราวหลายหลาก ที่ซ่อนเร้นอยู่ในป่าดิบแห่งนี้
แผ่นดินที่ชุ่มฉํ่านั้นมีผลต่ออุณหภูมิของป่า คือค่อนข้างคงที่อยู่ระหว่าง 20-32 เซลเซียส ไม่มีฤดูร้อน ฤดูหนาว หรือฤดูใบไม้ผลิ มีก็แต่ฤดูเปียกกับแห้ง
เมื่ออุณหภูมิคงที่ ต้นไม้จึงผลัดใบ แตกหน่อแตกตา ผลิดอกออกผล ตลอดเวลาทั้งปี เช่นว่า หลังฝนตกใหญ่ บางทีต้นไม้ก็ชูช่อดอกไสว ราวกับฤดูใบไม้ผลิมาถึงแล้วนั้นเอง พอถึงตอนเที่ยงวันอันอบอ้าว เสียงนกกาเงียบหายไป ใบไม้หุบ กลีบดอกจะร่วงพรูลงดินเหมือนอยู่ในเหมันตฤดู และพอความมืดเข้ามาเยือน อากาศก็เย็นเยียบลงเฉียบพลันจวบจนอรุณรุ่งจึงจะมีความสดชื่นเข้ามาแทนที่อีกครั้ง ชีวิตในหนึ่งวันเป็นดังเหมือนผ่านฤดูกาลทั้งสี่ฤดู
ความคงที่ของอุณหภูมิยังทำให้สภาพป่าและพรรณไม้ดำรงอยู่ โดยไม่เปลี่ยนแปลงมาแต่ยุคดึกดำบรรพ์ ป่าในยุโรปหรืออเมริกาเหนือนั้นอายุแค่ราว 11,000 ปี แต่ป่าดงดิบอเมซอนมีมากกว่า 100 ล้านปีแล้ว!!
เป็นป่าเดียวที่หลงเหลืออยู่ให้ใครๆ ได้สัมผัสถึงอดีตอันไกลโพ้น มีสรรพสิ่งถือกำเนิดและวิวัฒนาการมากมายหลาย หลากยิ่งกว่าป่าใดในโลก ยกตัวอย่างเช่น ปลาหลายชนิดเคยเป็นปลาทะเลที่เปลี่ยนมาอยู่ในนํ้าจืด รวมแล้วในแม่นํ้าเครืออเมซอนมีปลาถึงกว่า 3,000 สกุล เทียบกับแม่นํ้ายุโรปที่มีเพียงแค่ 150 สกุล
แต่น่าประหลาดที่สัตว์ใหญ่บนบกกลับหาดูได้ยาก จากความที่พื้นดินไร้แสงแดดและตลอดปีเวลาส่วนใหญ่มักน้ำท่วม จึงมีพืชน้อย สัตว์กินพืชจึงน้อย สัตว์กินเนื้อ (ซึ่งกินสัตว์กินพืช) ก็เลยน้อยไปด้วย
สัตว์ต่างๆ ที่ดำรงชีพในป่าอเมซอนได้นั้นเป็นเพราะมีการปรับตัว ให้เข้ากับสภาพสิ่งแวดล้อมของป่า สัตว์หลายชนิดปีนป่ายขึ้นไปอยู่บนยอดไม้สูง หลายชนิดหัดว่ายนํ้าเพื่ออาศัยอยู่ริมตลิ่งอันอุดมด้วยพืชผัก
ป่าอเมซอนกินเนื้อที่กว้างถึง 2 ใน 5 ของ อเมริกาใต้ ครอบคลุมพื้นที่ครึ่งหนึ่งของบราซิล ที่เหลือนั้นแผ่เข้าไปในอีก 8 ประเทศใกล้เคียง คิดเป็นเนื้อที่ป่าได้ราว 2.5 ล้านตารางไมล์ (6.4 ล้านตารางกิโลเมตร) ส่วนใหญ่เป็นที่ราบลุ่ม ขนานกับเส้นศูนย์สูตร และสิ่งที่แบ่งป่า ออกเป็นตอนเหนือกับตอนใต้ ก็คือ แม่นํ้าอเมซอน
ซึ่งมีต้นนํ้าอยู่ที่เปรู แล้วไหลจากตะวันตกไปตะวันออก เป็นระยะทางถึง 6,400 กิโลเมตร ลงสู่มหาสมุทรแอตแลนติก แต่ที่น่าตื่นตะลึงก็คือ ขนาดปริมาตรของมันที่ไม่มีแม่นํ้าใดเทียมทัน ทั้งนี้เพราะมีแควที่ไหลลงมาสู่แม่นํ้านี้ถึง 1,100 สาย และความกว้างของแม่นํ้าอเมซอน ก็มีขนาดใหญ่มาก ประมาณว่าเหนือจากปากอ่าวขึ้นไปในทวีป 1,000 กว่ากิโล ก็ยังกว้างถึง 10 กิโลเมตร ส่วนความกว้างที่ปากอ่าว320 กิโลเมตร จึงขอเรียกเป็น "ขุมทรัพย์มหาศาลป่าอเมซอน"
